Bowen Therapy
Galia Atteslander N.D. (Can.)
Bowen Therapy is a gentle and safe yet dynamic remedial type of therapy that facilitates the body in healing itself. It is a non-invasive muscle release technique consisting of a series of gentle cross fibre moves over the fascia or connective tissue of the muscle on key points on the body. Stimulation of the fascia with specific Bowen Therapy moves sends neurological impulses up to the brain via the nervous system, resulting in muscle relaxation, a reduction in pain and discomfort and improved movement of the joints. There are regular pauses between the series of gentle moves to give the body the required time for this process to occur.
Fascia is a specific type of connective tissue that forms a three dimensional web that surrounds every tissue in the body. It is the ‘body organiser’ embracing all nerves, bones, arteries, veins and muscles and is rich in a range of receptors that powerfully influence the body’s neuro-muscular physiology in many complex ways. Therefore fascial dysfunction can affect every structure, muscle, nerve and organ in the body.
The principal benefit of Bowen Therapy is the rapid and long term or permanent remission from pain, reduced stress, greater joint mobility and an overall improvement in physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Also, because Bowen Therapy produces an integrated body response, additional benefits can include improved circulation, lymphatic drainage, immune function and detoxification.
Bowen Therapy has few contraindications and because of its gentle, relaxing and non-invasive nature, it is ideal for everyone including children, pregnant women and the elderly. It is safe to use when other therapies are not recommended, including severe muscle spasms, bruising and inflammation. It is also safe to be used as a part of a treatment strategy for debilitating degenerative ailments such as Parkinson’s Disease and Multiple Sclerosis.
